Thirsk is an old fashioned market town in the Vale of Mowbray North Yorkshire. Famous for its race course, 15th Century Church of St Mary's and Thomas Lord founder of Lords Cricket Club. Thirsk is also the Darrowby of the late James Herriot (Alf Wight), famous vet and author. Thirsk and Sowerby are set in the centre of "Herriot Country" Gateway to the Yorkshire Dales National Park to the west and the North York Moors National Park to the east. Thirsk is about 320km north of London, 230km south of Edinburgh and 35km north west of York. The estimated population of Thirsk in 2001 was 4460, Sowerby 3610 and Carlton Miniott 920.
