| The White Horse and Cold Kirby
Our walk begins by launching out along the edge of the Hambleton Escarpment from Sutton Bank to the White Horse of Kilburn, a path which is a little bit special.
It offers the most spectacular outlook over the Vale of Mowbray to the far-flung hills of the northern dales, a vista which has, in fact, been described as the finest view in England.
An indicator stone near the point where the A170 Thirsk-Helmsley road breasts the top of the bank points out Knaresborough Castle (20 miles), Richmond (24 miles) and Great Whernside (32 miles). More extravagant claims have been made as to what you can see from this airy balcony. For instance, it is said you can watch a train leave York station and follow it all the way up the Vale of York and Vale of Mowbray to Darlington. Almost exactly 200 years ago, in 1802, William Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy paused at this spot to admire the prospect while journeying from Grasmere to Brompton, near Scarborough, to meet William's future bride, Mary Hutchinson. If you have not passed this way before, I can assure you, you will not be disappointed. Not only does this walk begin on a high note, but it ends on one, too.
After a grand tour of the White Horse and the rolling countryside around Cold Kirby, the path returns to the edge of the Hambleton Escarpment for a tip-top finish above the mysterious Gormire Lake and the dizzy heights of Whitestone Cliff.
